Getting the Bible right

We might expect an atheist to say this: “In what peace and concord would men have lived if the Gospel had never been heard of in the world!” But those words actually came from the Vicar of Constance 500 years ago, a time in which many church leaders apparently did not even read the Bible.

History has seemed to pivot back and forth between ignoring and worshipping the Bible. Both are damaging. The former breeds a faith with no historical root and a “blowing in the wind” of time. The latter begets a faith mired in the past and worship of a book rather than the God of the book.
