Looking at God's World

The verbs of Mary’s praise

I love to focus on verbs. Mary, the mother of Jesus, used the following verbs in her song of praise to God (Luke 1:46-56):

“My soul magnifies the Lord, …

my spirit rejoices in God, …

he has looked with favor …

the Mighty One has done great things …

holy is his name.

His mercy is for those who fear him…

He has shown strength …

he has scattered the proud …

He has brought down the powerful …

and lifted up the lowly; …

he has filled the hungry

and sent the rich away empty.

He has helped his servant … (NRSV)
